FMGs Must Appear for the Next Examination: NMC to Intern in India

Now, Foreign medical graduates (FMGs) must pass the National Exit Test (NExT) and meet the standards provided in the Foreign Medical Graduates Regulations, 2021 to enroll in an internship with the appropriate medical institutions approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

The NMC informed the FMG community of its new policy. The new policy noted that after finishing their four-and-a-half-year degree, MBBS graduates must do a year-long internship at recognized hospitals. However, NMC gave "one-time relaxation" to FMGs who completed their training in India last month.

A list of acceptable non-teaching institutions was supplied for the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI), which was sanctioned by the former Medical Council of India (MCI) for a year (up until May 2024)  to the FMG interns.

NExT will function as a common final-year MBBS qualifying exam, a licensing exam for the practice of contemporary medicine, a merit-based postgraduate course entrance, and a screening exam for international medical graduates who wish to practice in India.
